X-SeeO2 Presented at 2nd MC3 Conference in Tokyo: Real-Time X-Ray Diffraction & Imaging of Cement Curing

Our Consortium Coordinator, Prof. Miguel A. G. Aranda (Universidad de Málaga), presented the latest advancements of the X-SeeO2 project at the 2nd International Conference on Mineral Carbonation for Cement and Concrete (2nd MC3 Conference) held in Tokyo, Japan, from September 28 to 30, 2026.

In his talk, titled “European Innovation Council X-SeeO2 project: Real-time X-ray diffraction and microstructure imaging of cement curing“, Prof. Aranda shared key research insights co-authored by researchers from University de Malaga (UMA) and the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF).

Key Scientific & Project Highlights:

In-Situ Characterisation: Development of specialized gas flow cell setups at the ESRF ID22 beamline, enabling real-time Synchrotron X-ray Powder Diffraction (SXRPD) pattern collection under controlled CO2 pressure and temperature conditions.

Microstructure Analysis: Integration of Synchrotron X-ray micro-Computed Tomography (SXRµCT) and SXRPD data workflows to track CO2 mineralisation kinetics in cementitious systems.

Consortium Synergy: Collaborative research efforts combining expertise from the universities of Malaga (UMA), Bath, Manchester, and the ESRF.

EIC Portfolio Integration: X-SeeO2 is proud to be a part of  the €22.5M EIC Pathfinder Challenge 2024 portfolio focused on “Towards cement and concrete as a carbon sink”. Explore our broader initiative and sister projects on the official portfolio landing page: https://eic-carbonsink.eu/
