NEW ONLINE PLATFORM BRINGS TOGETHER SIX BREAKTHROUGH EUROPEAN RESEARCH
PROJECTS WORKING TOWARDS CARBON-NEGATIVE CEMENT AND CONCRETE
15 September 2026 – The European Innovation Council (EIC) Cement and Concrete Portfolio,
established under the EIC Pathfinder Challenge “Towards cement and concrete as a
carbon sink”, has launched its new website, eic-carbonsink.eu.
The new platform showcases the Portfolio’s shared ambition to transform cement and concrete from a leading
source of global emissions into part of a carbon-negative built environment. The initiative
brings together six breakthrough European research projects working collaboratively on
technologies and approaches to achieve radical reductions in emissions from cement and
concrete production.
The Portfolio comprises CILANTRO, CONCERTO, C-SINC, ECO-SLAG-CEM, MOJITO, and
X-SeeO₂, bringing together complementary expertise and technological approaches under
one shared mission.
Research across the Portfolio focuses on four complementary areas: alternative binders and
production processes; reducing clinker content and improving binder efficiency; reducing
energy use and process emissions; and enabling technologies, including computational tools
and artificial intelligence. The projects aim not only to advance individual technologies, but
also to share methodologies, data and results and develop a joint understanding of their
potential contribution to cement and concrete decarbonisation.
Beyond technological development, the Portfolio addresses the conditions needed to bring
innovative solutions closer to the market, including techno-economic viability, regulatory
alignment and commercialisation pathways. Its long-term objective is to contribute to new
products and processes capable of supporting Europe’s climate objectives while
strengthening European technological leadership and reducing dependence on critical raw
materials.
About the EIC Cement and Concrete Portfolio
The EIC Pathfinder Challenge Towards cement and concrete as a carbon sink brings together
six breakthrough research projects pursuing innovative pathways towards decarbonised and
ultimately carbon-negative cement and concrete. Through close collaboration between the
projects, the Portfolio seeks to combine scientific and technological innovation with
economic, regulatory and commercial perspectives, helping accelerate the transition towards
a more sustainable European built environment.
